400 rpmĪdding 5 degrees back rake made it EVEN better. 030 flat on the bottom, with zero on the face. You probably just need to fix your cutter geometry Posted: Mon 12:04 am Post subject: Re: heads flycut or milling ? You can do a plunge cut but make sure it actually square. Posted: Sun 6:32 pm Post subject: Re: heads flycut or milling ?Īnd what finish be that? Not smooth enough for you w/ the Wohlhaupter? I'll probably see about just welding a head on a boring head screw instead of starting from scratch. I sold my milling machine as it was very small and I hadn't used it in years, but dream of getting a bigger machine some day and will make one of these. ![]() Each time around the star piece will hit the stick shown below and advance the cutter out or in (depending if you do high or low on the star). You simply used a dowel or small metal piece and stuck it in high or low to get the screw turning while the machine was running. Some versions referenced in old machine manuals had a simpler version in that the handle part wasn't there. I've always thought about modifying a simple boring head so that the adjustment side has the star pattern on one side. I'm sure you can make the old school facing tool for single point cutting yourself. Posted: Sun 7:14 am Post subject: Re: heads flycut or milling ? Those mills are similar to Deckels, common/made in Germany and other parts of Europe, I have an FP series, its over 50 also, got in 87,took the optics off and put on a DRO Posted: Sun 6:45 am Post subject: Re: heads flycut or milling ? Posted: Sun 3:42 am Post subject: Re: heads flycut or milling ? counterboring tool, for as you say, "plunge cutting".Īlthough if it's going so fast you can't see it, then, it's FLYIN ![]() IMO a flycutter is tehcnically a single point tool. In reality we do whatever works best with what equipment we actually have. The diameter of the tool would have to be large enough to get the surface speed high, yet not too large that it cannot cover the whole surface. I think the "best way" would be single point tool, interpolate a circle, with a single pcd insert. Posted: Sat 10:30 pm Post subject: Re: heads flycut or milling ? He wants to to know if flycutting, (plunge cutting with a tool hopefully set flat), or end milling, (circular interpolation with CNC or rotary table), would be the best to cut his heads for 94 p&c. If what you got is a simple milling machine, you have to do the work using the old fashion boring technique - with a boring head tool. Whatever you used to bore the case, the same tool should be able to flycut or bore the surfaces in the head.Ī CNC can bore or flycut any hole, any shape, any size using only an endmill. Posted: Sat 9:16 am Post subject: Re: heads flycut or milling ? ![]() A facing/boring head Wohlhopter style works well but mill has to be perfectly square with table and spindle should be locked all the way up and use table to set depth, (in knee style mill) Don't forget to use a corner radius (.5-1mm) in the head whether you fly cut or mill, then make sure cyl. what is it?), head out of square, slop in spindle ect. IMHO milling is best now with CNC so readily available, rotary table works well to, just has to be big, used them back in the 80's before CNC was common. With end milling its easier to control depth, and no worries about the the angle on the fly cutter tool, (0 deg. Posted: Sat 7:46 am Post subject: Re: heads flycut or milling ? Manual machines would need a rotary table or fly/boring cutter if you wanted to do the cut in increments.Įither way I think you could use sand paper or similar to remove machine marks, or even cut the polished surface off if you wanted.Īs seen in Volks America Issue 14 (Full page review) I think a lot of people have used the fly cutter with success.
